Breast Cancer Champions

The Breast Cancer Champions project is a collaboration between the Breast Cancer Education Association (BCEA), Sage Programs at the Minnesota Department of Health (“Sage”), and Dr. David Haynes at the University of Minnesota. It builds on work established through the Sisters Standing Up to Breast Cancer project that was a collaboration between the StairStep Foundation, Sage, mobile mammography providers and selected health systems to prioritize screening black women for breast cancer at trusted, community locations such as churches. Dr. Haynes and Dr. Hughes joined the project to provide data to identify neighborhoods in the metro area with low breast cancer screening rates so the project would best know where to be active.

Nationally and in Minnesota, black women die at higher rates from breast cancer than women of other groups. Breast Cancer Champions (BCC) is a collaborative, evidence-based project that was formed to meet and reverse this disparity. BCC aims to improve breast cancer outcomes for black women through community experts and peer-to-peer educators, or “Champions,” who support awareness and screening in their communities. BCC has been active since September 2020, and has worked through the COVID-19 pandemic to 1) design culturally-appropriate breast cancer education for black women, 2) train and deploy 14 Champions, 3) build a network of community partnerships, and 4) engage over 2,300 women on breast cancer education and refer 448 to screening. Champions design their own community education activities to best reach women in their community. Collectively, the autonomy the Champions have to design and direct their education outreach results in being able to reach a larger number of communities and locations. When COVID pandemic greatly reduced cancer screening access, Champions effectively pivoted to socially-distanced and social-media driven education opportunities that continued to reach community women.

Champions are recognized as community experts best able to reach women in their communities for education and support for screening. Women need information, support and resources like Sage to access screening. Champions carry a “Tool Kit” with key messages on breast cancer and mammograms, resources such as Sage and a list of breast cancer screening opportunities.

The project supports Champions financially, with training, networking groups, educational materials, branding, and access to knowledgeable professionals for additional cancer information or help with social media.

Champions grow the project by expanding capacity for community education, screening and training new women to be Champions.
